What is OET?

The Occupational English Test is for medical practitioners who aim to practice their profession and gain permanent residency in an English-speaking country like Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and the UK. The test has been designed to help several healthcare professions.

Healthcare professionals apply for the OET to be able to prove their level of English proficiency to be able to deliver superior healthcare. OET exam has been specifically designed for 12 healthcare professions including Occupational Therapy, Dentistry, Nursing, Radiography, Veterinary Science, Medicine, Speech Pathology, Physiotherapy, Dietetics, Podiatry, Pharmacy, and Optometry.

How Is OET Different To Other English Language Tests?

Patient safety and quality of care OET was designed specifically to meet the language needs of the healthcare sector. Test materials are developed in consultation with subject matter experts and replicate the English language skills required in healthcare settings to deliver patient safety and quality of care. While studying for OET, candidates learn exactly the type of language they will need every day at work

OET is accepted by healthcare regulators and educational institutions in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland, Singapore, UAE, Namibia and the Ukraine, including:

  • The General Medical Council (UK)
  • The Nursing and Midwifery Council (UK)
  • Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • The Medical Council (Ireland)
  • The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland
  • Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates | Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (ECFMG®|FAIMER®)
  • Florida Board of Nursing
  • Oregon State Board of Nursing OET is also accepted in Australia and New Zealand for visa and immigration purposes.

About the Test

The OET is available for 12 professions: Dentistry, Dietetics, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Radiography, Speech Pathology, and Veterinary Science.

If you do not fall into any of these streams, you simply take the Writing and Speaking sub-test for the field that is closest to yours.

The minimum score required for most purposes is Grade B in each sub-test. Just like most other English tests, OET scores are valid for 2 years.

The OET test registration costs AUD587 (Australian Dollars) as on 31st December 2021. There is one test date each month. It is best to book you test date about 45 days in advance.
