OET Exam Structure

This section involves reading short texts related to the healthcare industry and answering multiple-choice questions based on these texts. Part A takes 15 minutes, Parts B and C together takes 45 minutes to complete. Part B has 6 tasks of about 150 words with 1 question each. Part C also asks you 8 multiple-choice questions with 4 options per task. The great thing about part C is that it guides you as to where within a text the question is, so there’s no more need to navigate yourself through the information

In this section, you'll be provided a case note and a task, and you're given five minutes to read through them (during those five minutes, you're not allowed to use a pen or a pencil). After that, you've got 40 minutes to jot down a letter in step with the task. Within the writing session, you may be assessed for the subsequent measures: purpose, content, conciseness & clarity, genre & style, organization & layout, and language. The writing part is sometimes the foremost challenging, and it's advisable to practice before the particular exam.

In this section, the exam assesses your ability to understand spoken language. It is divided into three parts: A, B, and C. You will listen to consultations between physicians and patients (part A), monologues (i.e., one person speaking) and dialogues (i.e., two people speaking) for parts B and C. With each encounter, you will have to fill in the answers based on information in the listening exercise.

In the speaking section, you participate in two role-playing exercises where you take the professional’s part (i.e., a physician) and thus the interlocutor plays as "a patient, a patient’s relative, or a caregiver." You start by getting a card that states the setting, the patient's information, and also the task. Once you get this card, you have three minutes to prepare. Then, you will get five minutes to perform the role-play. Once you finish one role-play, you will get another card for another role-play but with another different setting and different patient/caregiver

OET Exam Tips:

The first step to preparing for an exam is learning about the structure of the test. To get familiar with the content of each section, it’s important to see what will be on the test in advance so you know how you’ll perform.

Make a study plan. This will help you focus and avoid getting distracted. Studying can be challenging, but it’s possible if you have a study plan. Create a timetable that suits your preferences and schedule, focusing on one sub-test per day, then practicing all the sub-tests during the weekend.

Take mock tests under conditions resembling the OET Exam. Some things require the utmost attention to detail. Following a systematic approach to learning how to utilize grammar and vocabulary is essential for tackling anything in English

In each sub-test, there are specific criteria that you might not be aware of. Be aware of the dos and don’ts for each sub-test to make sure you achieve good results in your OET assessment. 1. Make a study plan. Designate specific days and times each week for studying, and stick to it. This will help you focus and avoid getting distracted.

  2. Use practice tests. A practice test before your actual test will help you better understand the materials and improve your score. Avoid making mistakes during practice exams. If you make any mistakes on your practice exams, don’t hesitate to go back and review the material until you are sure you have understood it correctly. This will help you avoid making similar mistakes on your actual IELTS exam.
  3. Learn the grammar rules. Knowing the basic grammar rules will make it easier to understand the English language in general and the IELTS exam in particular.

  4. Get comfortable with the language. Familiarize yourself with the idioms, expressions, and vocabulary used on the IELTS exam so you can use them correctly when answering questions. Know what topics are covered on each part of the test, and be aware of the specific vocabulary and phrases used in each section. Most Importantly:
Get plenty of sleep. Try to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night before your test. This will help you stay mentally alert and avoid any fatigue during the exam
