Eligibility Requirements
Meet One Of The Following Criteria
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a Fire Protection-related discipline plus 2 years of work experience dedicated to curtailing fire loss.
- Associate’s degree in a Fire Protection-related discipline plus 4 years of work experience dedicated to curtailing fire loss.
- High school diploma, or equivalent plus 6 years of work experience dedicated to curtailing fire.
How To Apply
- Complete the online application. (Note: The application requires the signature of your supervisor or a HR representative, to validate your current )
- Pay the $350 initial exam fee.
- Submit required documents
- Allow 15 business days for review of your application.
- NFPA will email an authorization letter with exam scheduling
- Special accommodations are available, in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

- Resume’ reflecting work experience dedicated to curtailing fire loss
- Copy of college degree or an official transcript showing awarding of the degree
- Signed copy of the Code of Conduct and Ethics Declaration (Pg. 20 in Candidate Handbook)
NOTE: If you do not provide all required documentation, your application will not be processed.
About The Exam
- Proctored computer-based exam
- Open book
- 3-hours
- 100 multiple-choice questions
- Available in English only
- You have 12 months, from the application approval date, to pass the exam.
Exam Preparation Tips
- Become thoroughly familiar with the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook (20th Edition).
- Review the CFPS Exam Content Area Blueprint presented as Appendix I in the candidate
- A computer-based online CFPS Practice Exam is available for $75.00 and can be purchased here.
- NFPA offers optional exam prep trainings, as well as a CFPS practice exam. Details for online training options can be found here.
Exam Day
- A valid government issued ID must be presented at the test
- A print copy of NFPA Fire Protection Handbook is the ONLY reference allowed in the test
- Smart phones and other electronic devices are NOT
- You will be notified whether you passed or failed upon completion of the
- Formal results will be sent to you within 10-15 business days.
Exam Fail / Retest
- Submit retest application with the $175.00 fee
- If needed, you may retest 2 additional times within 12-months of initial approval date
- Re-application is required after a third failed attempt.
Cancel / Reschedule Policy
- Exam dates may be rescheduled through the Prometric scheduling portal at https://proscheduler.prometric.com/scheduling/appointmentsearch
- There is no charge to reschedule 30 or more calendar days prior to your appointment date.
- A $50.00 fee will be charged, by Prometric, if you reschedule between 29 and 5 days prior to your appointment
- If you cancel your appointment 4 or fewer days prior to your appointment date, or fail to show for your scheduled exam, submission of a retest application and fee will be required.
Renewal / Annual Fee
- A fee of $125.00 is due on the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd anniversary of the certification issue
- Log into your online account to pay the https://nfpa.cyzap.net/nfpacfpsonline/login/
Recertification / Professional Development
- Recertification is required on the 3rd anniversary of the certification issue date, and every 3 years
- Document 50 professional development points related to the fire safety profession during the 3-year certification
- On the 3rd year certification anniversary, submit the Recertification Application and Points Summary
- There is no recertification fee, but you must still pay the annual renewal fee for the year..
- Random audits, of professional development points, are conducted up to 6 months from the recertification date.
Use Of The CFPS Credential
- Must maintain active certification status
- Certified may refer to themselves as a CFPS credential holder
- CFPS designation may be used after certified’s name on business cards, personal letterhead, resumes, websites, and in their email
- Certified’s name and address must always be displayed with the CFPS logo.
